A. A. Golovachev was born on November 27 (December 10), 1909 in the village of Lyubokhna in the Bryansk district of the Oryol province (now an urban-type settlement in the Dyatkovsky district of the Bryansk region), in a working-class family.

He has been in the army since 1929. Member of the CPSU(b) since 1931. In 1932 he graduated from the United military School named after the Central Executive Committee of the RSFSR.

In 1939-1940 he participated in the Soviet-Finnish war.

Since 1941, Golovachev served on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, since March 1942 commander of the 1326th Infantry Regiment of the 415th Infantry Division, and since August 1942 - the 52nd motorized Rifle Brigade of the 15th Tank Corps of the 3rd Tank Army. For the difference in the battles in February 1943, the brigade under the command of Golovachev was renamed the 23rd Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 7th Guards Tank Corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army.
