Afanasy Fedorovich Shcheglov was born on January 15, 1912 in the village of Mikhali, now Oleninsky district of the Tver region, into a poor peasant family. He graduated from high school in Rzhev and, at the age of 17, joined the Red Army and went to study as an artilleryman in Moscow. Then - Siberian Military District, Omsk. Already commander of an artillery battery. May 1936 - Military Academy of the Red Army named after M.V. Frunze. In 1939 he took part in the Soviet-Finnish war. For distinction in battles he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. In the Great Patriotic War, Captain A.F. Shcheglov participated from the very beginning - from June 1941.

In August, he was appointed commander of the 690th anti-tank defense artillery regiment (55th Army), which at that time was conducting defensive battles in the area of the city of Krasnogvardeysk and the Pulkovo Heights - on the main direction of the Nazi attack on Leningrad. In April 1943, he was entrusted with command of the 63rd Guards Rifle Division. Under his command, the division fought defensive battles on the approaches to Leningrad, then in the Volkhov-Luban direction. Commander of the 63rd Guards Rifle Division of the Guard, Colonel A.F. Shcheglov showed exceptional courage and skill during the Krasnoselsko-Ropshinsky operation in January 1944.

When breaking through the enemy’s most powerful layered defense on the approaches to Krasnoye Selo, the division surrounded and stormed the fortified defense center “Voronya Gora”, thereby ensuring the liberation of Krasnoye Selo. For this, the division was given the honorary name “Krasnoselskaya”.

In January 1944, the enemy blockade around the city of Lenin finally fell. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 13, 1944, Guard Colonel Afanasy Fedorovich Shcheglov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (№.888).
