229th Taman Red Banner Fighter Aviation division.

The division was formed in May 1942 in Slavyanoserbskaya station.

For active combat operations and heroism shown by the division's pilots during the liberation of the Taman Peninsula, the division was awarded the honorary name "Tamanskaya" (

10/29/1943). For active combat operations during the liberation of Bialystok (Bialystok operation – July 1944), the division was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Battle

The Taman Missile Division of the Strategic Missile Forces was formed on the basis of 229 IAD in 1961.

Currently, the division is a strike force of the Strategic Missile Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

Distinguished soldiers of the division

For exemplary performance of combat missions in the battles against the Nazi invaders, 30 pilots of the division were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Hero of the Soviet Union – Colonel Maksimenko Vasily Ivanovich – amateur radio – call sign U2IZ (UQ2IZ).

By October 1942, he had flown 250 combat missions, shot down 7 enemy aircraft in 15 air battles. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR "On awarding the title of Hero of the Soviet Union to the commanding staff of the Red Army" dated November 23, 1942, for "exemplary performance of combat missions of the command at the front of the fight against the German invaders and bravery and heroism", he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal.

By June 1943, Captain K. L. Kardanov had flown 550 combat missions, destroyed and disabled 2 tanks, 127 vehicles, 7 guns, 13 anti-aircraft points, and hundreds of Nazis. In total, he flew over 700 combat missions on I-16, LaGG-3 and La-5, personally shot down 17 enemy aircraft in air battles and 12 in a group.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated August 24, 1943, for courage and heroism shown in aerial battles with the Nazi invaders, Captain Kubati Lokmanovich Kardanov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 1147).

In total, during the war, Senior Lieutenant Andrei Mikhailovich Kulagin, having made 762 successful sorties, taking part in 142 air battles, shot down 32 enemy aircraft personally and 7 in group battles.[1]
