At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Siberia turned out to be a deep rear, far from the front line, where the leadership of the Soviet Union decided to deploy factories taken out of the European part of the country.

Factories and factories evacuated from the western part of the country began to arrive in the rear of Tomsk at the very beginning of the war, along with equipment, engineering and technical personnel, workers, and their families.

In Tomsk, they began to produce ammunition and parts of military equipment, clothing and footwear, canned fish, dried fruits and food concentrates for soldiers, an incendiary anti-tank mixture «Molotov cocktail» to undermine armored vehicles.

During the war years, two dozen hospitals were deployed in Tomsk with a total number of beds over ten thousand.

In the first year of the war, Tomsk received sixteen thousand wounded, in the second - forty thousand, and in total during the Great Patriotic War - over a hundred thousand. And it was mostly the seriously wounded who came here.

More than 130 thousand people were mobilized to the front, about 70 thousand soldiers did not return from the fronts of the Great Patriotic War.

During the war years, several military divisions were formed in Tomsk and the region. Massive reinforcements from our fellow countrymen entered divisions and brigades on the Leningrad and Stalingrad fronts. Tomichi ended the Second World War as part of divisions in battles with militaristic Japan on September 2, 1945.

Almost 50,000 Tomsk residents - participants in the Great Patriotic War were awarded orders and medals. 25 Heroes of the Soviet Union.

On July 2, 2020, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the city of Tomsk, among 20 cities of the country, was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation «City of Labor Valor» for the significant contribution of city residents to achieving Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, ensuring the uninterrupted production of military and civilian products in industrial enterprises, shown at the same time mass labor heroism and selflessness.
