Military aviators during the Great Patriotic War showed the highest courage and heroism.|
For the successful execution of combat missions of the command, the courage and bravery shown by more than 200 thousand soldiers-aviators and more than 80 thousand soldiers of air defense were awarded orders and medals of the USSR. More than 2,400 aviators and more than 100 air defense soldiers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (later-Hero of the Russian Federation).
65 pilots and military commanders of the Air Force were awarded this title twice: A. I. Koldunov, A. N. Efimov, G. A. Rechkalov, S. D. Lugansky, N. D. Gulaev, V. D. Lavrinenkov, P. M. Kamozin, P. A. Pokryshev, A. F. Klubov, A.V. Vorozheikin, N. M. Skomorokhov, G. F. Sivkov, E. M. Kungurtsev, G. M. Mylnikov, G. M. Parshin, V. I. Andrianov, T. Ya. Begeldinov, I. N. Stepanenko, I. X. Mikhailichenko, M. P. Odintsov and many others, and two – three times (A. I. Pokryshkin and I. N. Kozhedub). Orders of the USSR were awarded to 897 air units and units, 708 (Air Force) and 29 (Air Defense Troops of the CU) received honorary titles and 228 (Air Force) and 11 (Air Defense Troops of the CU) were awarded the title of Guards.
