The honorary title of the Russian Federation "City of Military Glory" was awarded to Petrozavodsk for the courage, resilience and mass heroism shown by the defenders of the city in the struggle for the freedom and independence of their native land in the Great Patriotic War.|
In early September 1941, the 7th Army Corps of the Finnish Karelian Army struck in the Petrozavodsk direction and broke through the defenses of the Soviet 71st Infantry Division. On October 2, 1941, the city was captured by the Finns and renamed Onegaborg. In June 1944, the Svir-Petrozavodsk operation began against the Finnish troops in southern Karelia as part of the Vyborg-Petrozavodsk strategic offensive operation. The offensive began from the area of Lodeynoye Pole. Realizing the senselessness of resistance, the Finns did not defend Petrozavodsk and on June 28, soldiers of the Onega landing force entered the city without a fight. This date is celebrated today as the day of the city.
