The Battle of Rzhev is the bloodiest battle in the history of mankind. And the most hushed up by historians. On the Rzhev bridgehead there were 2/3 divisions of the army "Center" for the offensive on Moscow.
The losses of Soviet troops in the battles near Rzhev amounted to more than two million people, twice the losses of the Battle of Stalingrad. The 29th Army was killed in the forests near Rzhev. The city itself was transformed into a lunar landscape. Of the 40,000 population of the city, only 248 people remained.
After a fierce 15-month battle, Rzhev was never taken – the Germans themselves retreated to pre-prepared positions.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 2, 1978, the city of Rzhev was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War I degree for the courage shown by the city's workers in the fight against the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War, the successes achieved in economic and cultural construction.
"For the courage, steadfastness and mass heroism shown by the defenders of the city in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Fatherland" By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 1345 of October 8, 2007, the city of Rzhev was awarded the honorary title of "City of Military Glory".
