During the Great Patriotic War, Kalinin (1931-1990 - Kalinin, now Tver) became the first city liberated from the fascist-German invaders. The chronology of the events of 1941-1945 in the territory of the regional center and the Kalinin district indicates that fierce battles took place here, in which Soviet soldiers showed perseverance, courage and heroism. The losses of the troops of the Kalinin Front in the liberation operation amounted to more than 82,000 people. More than 20,000 people died during Kalinin's liberation. Civilian casualties during the occupation amounted to more than 2,500 people. Of the 700,000 residents of the region who participated in the war, 250,000 died. 300 soldiers became Heroes of the Soviet Union, and four people - twice Heroes. It was on the Tver land that the German troops received a tough rebuff, which later became a harbinger of the Great Victory. The victory of the Soviet troops at Kalinin was of great importance in the battle for the capital. An attempt to encircle Moscow ended in defeat. December 16 the city was liberated by units of the 29th and 31st Armies of the Kalinin Front, and further movement of the enemy was prevented.
