During the war years, 27 institutions and industrial enterprises from Central Russia and Ukraine were evacuated to Tyumen. In order to save production, enterprises continued to work in the rear for the benefit of the front. After their association with each other and with local factories, 22 enterprises were formed. Tyumen made shells, mortars, army motorcycles and batteries, electrical equipment for cars and tanks, medicines, shoes, uniforms. Women, teenagers, and children stood up to the machines. The working day lasted 12-18 hours. Teenagers at the age of 15–16 became professional locksmiths, turners, and assemblers. Among those evacuated to Tyumen during the war years was the design bureau of the legendary aircraft designer Oleg Antonov. On the site where the building of the Tyumen Regional Duma is now located, there was an aircraft factory that produced silent gliders for the needs of the front, designed for reconnaissance and throwing partisans behind enemy lines. More than 600 such transport gliders were assembled here. And the most important contribution to the Victory is the people of Tyumen and the inhabitants of the region, who fought and gave their lives on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Over 50 thousand of our fellow countrymen gave their lives in defense of the Motherland, every tenth of them fell in the Battle of Stalingrad. Up to 10 thousand natives of the Tyumen region, including Yamal, were captured by the Nazis. More than 70 thousand were awarded military medals and orders for their feat of arms, 90 of them are Heroes of the Soviet Union. After the end of the war, 5,523 people returned to the city from the front. 12 participants in the war were awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union. At the same time, Antonov was working on the creation of the "Winged Tank". The only copy based on the T-60 flew in 1942.
