Runov Boris Alexandrovich

05/24/1925 - 09/22/2017

Hero of the Soviet Union

On May 1, 1945, the company under his command was alerted, given two tanks and thrown towards the Nazis who escaped from the encirclement, heading straight for the headquarters of the 4th Panzer Army. B.A. Runov left both tanks at the outermost houses of the village, turned the platoon into a chain and led towards the Germans. The platoon soldiers stretched out in the forest, the lieutenant went to the edge of the forest and met the Germans face to face. They turned out to be much more than expected. Our tanks were 300 meters away, but they were not visible because of the trees and there was no communication with them. B.A. Runov ordered the soldiers not to shoot, to return to the tanks and bring them to the edge. He himself remained alone face to face with the enemy.

The Germans surrounded B.A. Runov, the officer pointed a parabellum at him. B.A. Runov pulled out a hand grenade from his pocket. He knew German and shouted to the Nazis: “Drop your weapons! Give up! Behind me are tanks. Resistance is futile, you will be destroyed…”. The soldiers did not want to die for the sake of a lost war. Another officer approached the German officer and said: “Put down the parabellum, major. Soldiers don't want to die. And you, lieutenant, put away the grenade…” The Germans, and there were about 700 of them, surrendered. For a successful operation and the capture of a large group of Germans, who, as it turned out later, went straight to the headquarters of the 4th Panzer Army, Lieutenant B.A. Runov was introduced to the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Then he was not full 20 years old.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 27, 1945, Lieutenant Runov Boris AleksandrovichHe was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal.
