The Russian city of Rzhev is located in the Tver region, on the Volga River, which divides it into two historical districts. Rzhev was founded in 1019, and over its history has repeatedly participated in many significant military events.

During the Great Patriotic War, Rzhev was occupied for a long 17 months. Since June 1941, the city has been regularly attacked by German aircraft, and on October 14 it was captured by the troops of Verkhmat. The Battle of Rzhev (1941-1943) is one of the most tragic and bloody battles in the entire world history. In the battles near Rzhev, the losses of Soviet troops almost doubled the losses of our soldiers in the battles near Stalingrad. Of the 56 thousand residents living in Rzhev before the war, only 150 people remained alive. After the war, this town was completely rebuilt.

In October 2007, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Rzhev was awarded the honorary title "City of Military Glory".
