From the fortress Rostov was formed

And it was placed on the Don just right -

He was called Dimitri of Rostov,

More than once I fought off adversaries,

It was a fortress and remains a fortress -

A reliable gateway to the Caucasus.

Rostov-on-Don is one of the most significant cities in southern Russia. It was founded in 1749, on the banks of the Don, 50 km away. before the river flows into the Sea of Azov, as a fortress for the defense of the southern borders of the country and a center for trade with the countries of the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Rostov is one of the centers of the Don Cossacks, which has long been famous for their daring and courage in defending the Fatherland, both in numerous wars with Turkey and in the War of 1812.

During the Great Patriotic War, Rostov-on-Don suffered particularly difficult trials; it was captured by the enemy twice. The first time this happened was in November 1941. But a week later, as a result of the Soviet counter-offensive, the city was recaptured.

This was the first major victory of the Red Army and the first significant defeat of the Nazis in the Second World War. Rostov became the first large city, the first regional center, recaptured from the invaders. The defeat of the enemy near Rostov thwarted the plans of the German command to break through to the Caucasus.

In July 1942, after the defeat near Kharkov and the beginning of the attack on Kuban, the city was again captured by the enemy and liberated only after the decisive offensive of the Red Army, which began near Stalingrad in 1943.

For the courage and heroism shown by the city’s defenders during the war, Rostov-on-Don was awarded the title “City of Military Glory” in May 2008.
